Music Tuition

At LGGS we have a thriving music tuition provision, with around 200 students learning an instrument/voice within school. The system has proven to be a great success over the years with many of our students achieving graded exams, performing in school bands and choirs and some even going on to perform in national ensembles. A number of our students have also used their lessons at LGGS as a springboard to becoming professional musicians.

What tuition do we offer?

We pride ourselves on the variety of instruments we can offer at LGGS, in the hope that there is something to appeal to everyone! The following tuition disciplines are available for 2023 – 2024:

Brass:  Trumpet / Cornet / French Horn / Trombone / Tuba
Drums
Guitar:  Acoustic & Electric Guitar / Electric Bass
Harp
Piano
Strings:  Violin / Viola / Cello / Double Bass
Voice:  Singing tuition for all abilities
Woodwind:  Flute / Clarinet / Saxophone / Oboe / Bassoon / Recorder
Music Production:  Our newest discipline, focusing on creating music using technology such as Ableton and Logic.  A school device or personal laptop will be required
When and where do the lessons take place?

All Year 7 to 9 lessons take place during the school day on a rotating timetable.  This ensures that pupils do not miss the same academic lesson every week. Each teacher is in school for one/two days of the week.
For Year 10 – 13 students, lessons can be arranged before and after school and during lunchtime/break to ensure minimal disruption to GCSE and A-level lessons.
Lessons take place in one of the 5 practice rooms.  The room number will be made clear on the timetable.

Will we receive updates on our child’s progress?

Yes.  All communication and timetabling will be issued via our new music management software called PracticePal.  Regular updates and at least one formal report per year will be uploaded by tutors.

How long are the lessons and how much do they cost?

We offer two types of lesson:

  • 20 min individual (recommended for beginner/intermediate students – e.g. up to grade 4)
  • 30 min. individual (for more advanced students – e.g. grade 5 +)

All instrumental staff charge £33 per hour, so the cost of each lesson is:

  • £11.00 for a 20 min lesson
  • £16.50  for a 30 min lesson

You will be invoiced by the tutor at the start of each term and be expected to pay for a full term in advance.  The number of lessons will vary depending on the length of the term. If you wish to stop lessons you must inform us at least two weeks before the end of a term.  Lessons will then stop at the end of that term.  If we receive Pupil Premium funding for your child then they will be eligible for free tuition.
